Supposedly responsible for the deaths of over 60 people, Antrum was a 1979 film only screened once in a showing that killed over 50 people when the theater was set blaze by the audience. Later, it was sent around to film festivals, resulting in the deaths of many festival programmers. Presumed lost, it has since been found and is show in its entirety by an enterprising group of documentarians. The first 8 minutes of the version shown are a documentary about the cursed history of the film followed by the film and some follow-up documentary beats. It works, the film itself tries very hard to look like an authentic 70s film with mixed results, and the documentary segments are executed flawlessly. The threadbare plot concerns a brother and sister who journey into the woods to dig a hole to Hell. That’s it, that’s the whole story, but it’s the events that occur around them as they dig that are truly interesting. To be fair, the film segment doesn’t really live up to the documentary hype (how could it? ) and while there are some unnerving moments it never really scared me. As a curiosity, Antrum is interesting and well-made. Anyone looking for a decent mockumentary horror film should check it out. Currently streaming on Amazon Prime. (2/5).
